Making the Pies

     In preparation for our Thanksgiving Dessert Celebration the first grade classes made pies! Thanks to all the filling and crust donations we were able to make 19 pies between the two first grade classes! The boys and girls could hardly wait to taste their pies!

Our Thanksgiving Dessert Celebration!

     We were so excited the day of our Thanksgiving Dessert Celebration.  We practiced our Thanksgiving reading and anticipated the arrival of our guests. What a nice afternoon we had sharing what we are thankful for and eating pie with special visitors.  Thank you to everyone for your support.

Election Day and Making Butter

First Graders Voting on Election Day?

     On election day the first grade classes had the opportunity to vote.  Although they did not vote for a presidential candidate they DID vote on the flavor pie we should have for our Thanksgiving Dessert Celebration on November 16th.  So the votes are in and the flavors are....chocolate cream, blueberry and pumpkin.  Thanks to Mrs. Weis the students learned about the voting process and what a ballot is.  Each child had the opportunity to privately vote in a special voting booth she created.

Making Butter

           With Thanksgiving being right around the corner our discussions about this holiday continue.  This week we discussed how the first Thanksgiving and our Thanksgiving celebration look very different from each other.  How did the pilgrims cook their food differently than we do? Where did they probably eat their feast? What are some traditions that we have that they did not have? Where did the pilgrims get their food?  These are just a few questions we answered together.  As an extension of this lesson we learned about how butter was made back then.  Although we didn't have an authentic butter churner we still were able to make butter and taste butter that did not come from a store.  Mrs. Tubia even made some homemade bread for us to eat our butter with.  By the smiles on their faces I guess the boys and girls enjoyed this new taste!  

Family Trees

     This week we kicked off the Thanksgiving season by discussing how grateful we are for our families.  We made "family trees" to represent each person we live with.  They are beautiful fall trees with leaves created from our finger prints.  What a nice job the first graders did on this unique depiction of our families.  Look for them in upcoming school events!



Our Week...

A Busy Week... 

     This week we had our ups and our downs, our happy times and our sad times, our productive and not so productive times.  But overall we learned together, played together, cried together and laughed together.  It's been a good week! Here is a peek at some of the things we experienced in first grade.

Fire Prevention:

     Firemen came to the school this week and spoke to us about fire safety.  We learned to never play with matches and lighters and to always exit a burning building quickly without stopping to take anyone or anything with us.  We also learned that our families should have a meeting place in case a fire occurs at our home.  We reviewed stop, drop and roll....but best of all we got to high-five a real fireman!

Pumpkins!

     Autumn and pumpkins go hand in hand. So this week we read the story Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington. This story explains the growth of a pumpkin plant from seed to mature pumpkin depicted in beautiful illustrations.  We practiced sequencing the pumpkin's life and then decorated a small pumpkin to take home.

 The Different Properties of Blocks:

     Over the last two weeks we have been learning that different objects have properties (features) such as color, shape, size or buoyancy. This week we observed the properties of various wooden blocks and discovered that block properties help us build wonderful structures.

First Grade Readers

Reading with Friends:

     After practicing a reading selection for several days the first graders had an opportunity to share their books with each other.  Buddy reading is a fun way to practice familiar text and socialize with friends.





An Apple Extravaganza!

Apple Sauce, Apple Prints and Apple Crisp!

     Apples were everywhere! Our hands were sticky, the tables were messy and paint was splattered about our classroom this week.  Wow, did we have fun with apples! We cored, peeled, tasted, read about and painted apples.

 

The smell of the apple sauce cooking made our mouths water all day long! We couldn't wait until it was done to have a taste. But we did.....and it was so good!

But wait, there's more! We also made apple crisp...and learned that sometimes our hands make the best cooking tool.
